reid does in the have the 60 votes to overcome a republican filibuster. he needs five republican votes but so far he only has two, mike johanns of nebraska and thad cochrane of mississippi. so he took his colleagues to task in his own soft-spoken way. >> it's tragic that they've decided to filibuster this qualified nominee. it is really unfortunate. >> michael: you know, reid is of course not totally off the hook. he didn't push filibuster reform through earlier this year even though it looked like he had the chance to do so. but the ludicrous part of this whole thing is the reason why republicans are giving for opposing hagel is bengahzi. that this was a cover up after the ambassador was killed. they're alleging that chuck hagel was involved. not only is that a stretch but chuck hagel oversee something like this. they dignified the response. after both lindsey graham and john mccain said they were largely satisfied according to the hill, but they still wanted to push the hagueel vote back. in reality it's not like they actually care about any of that. th

harry reid decided he would just instead make a handshake deal with the republicans' top senator, mitch mcconnell. he said he was satisfied with the republicans just agreeing to be more reasonable on issues like this. remember? they wouldn't change the filibuster rules. they would just agree as gentlemen that the republicans would curtail the excesses of filibustering everything and effectively ruling from the minority. democrats decided to not change the rules on the filibuster and just make that agreement with the republicans instead. they said, you know, at a minimum this will at least improve the confirmation process for the administration's nominees. how is that working out now? just a couple of weeks later. how's that gentleman's agreement going? now that we've just had a filibuster of a cabinet nominee for the first time in american history. joining us now is andrea mitchell, nbc's chief foreign affairs correspondent, the host of "andrea mitchell reports" on msnbc. andr andrea, it's great having you here tonight. >> thank you very much. thanks, rachel. >> what happens next here?

and the nra has been kind of close to harry reid. they have not been adversarial to one another for years. and there is the rural culture of firearms in this country. but from what i'm told last night, they're going to try to get as much as they can on this. and the president is all in on this. the democrats are all in on it. it now comes down to the votes. house speaker john boehner was pressed about giving people the votes they deserve on gun safety today. here it is. >> how do we address violence in our society, how do we take meaningful steps to reduce that violence? and as i made clear for weeks, when the senate -- if the senate acts, we'll be happy to take a look at what they do. >> neera, is this a failure of leadership for boehner to just kick it over to the senate, we'll see what they do first? what do you make of that? >> i mean, i don't think americans define leadership by saying things like when the senate acts, we'll see what they can do. i think that really -- that kind of lackadaisical attitude towards something that p

"when senate majority leader harry reid says there has to be a path to citizenship, i wonder whether he's serious about doing immigration reform. you have to come at this with a willingness to look at all the options and find common ground." this is all on the heels of that bipartisan senate group that came forward with what they think is best for immigration reform. is the house really going to be an obstacle moving forward, chip, and not being on board? we know they've got their hearing that's taking place as we speak. >> we'll learn a little bit about what the house wanted to do with eric cantor and his speech, and the rebranding of the republican party. but first, thomas, congratulations on a big win on sunday. that was a great game. >> thank you, sir, i'm running out of purple. >> i'll send you some more. but for immigration in the house, we need to talk about what we believe in, and celebrate immigrants, and talk about how we do legal immigration, and make sure that people not only have -- the reason they break into this country is because there's not a pathway to get here lega
